what we do ___
We work with all types of city gardens from small plots to bigger gardens, balconies and rooftops. Clients come to us with requests from advice on a tricky spot, to refreshing a border, to designing an entirely new project. We deliberately limit the number of clients we work with at any one time so we can bring all our expertise to bear for you.
The client requests we address the most are:
Space
Using design techniques to create the illusion of more space, even in the smallest of gardens.
Shade
Plant combinations that work in your specific conditions, including north-facing gardens.
Privacy
Creating privacy in built-up areas, giving you and yours a peaceful space to relax and play in.
Biodiversity
Gardens that work for people and for nature, with interest through every season.
Rear gardens • Front gardens • Rooftops & Balconies • Tricky spots • Short-term needs
What matters most
Our six guiding principles
Year-round interest
Evergreen structure and seasonal colour that give even a small plot genuine interest throughout the year.
More from less
Careful planning that creates the illusion of more space and makes every square metre feel considered.
Light & shade
Plant combinations selected for your particular conditions, including north-facing gardens and rain-shadow.
Privacy
Gentle, layered solutions that help built-up spaces feel peaceful, sheltered and personal.
For nature
Planting that supports biodiversity while remaining beautiful, resilient and genuinely useful.
Future-ready
Plant choices and layouts that can adapt to changing weather, changing homes and changing lives.
High-touch, bespoke engagement
We bring our high-touch, bespoke approach to all our projects, small or large. Most of our commissions begin with a personal referral from an existing client or online enquiry. We begin with a home visit and this initial consultation helps us together with our clients determine the scope and nature of the project they want to tackle.
But all great projects start with great foundations. At Studio Caroline we are fanatical about right plant, right place. It’s so tempting to start with the plants that you like, but nothing beats understanding your garden’s aspect, light and rain shade and underlying soil conditions before discussing suitable plants.
We conduct a light-touch site analysis on our home visit which informs future planting choices.
The site analysis examines structural elements such as trees or nearby buildings, compass direction, shade, privacy and so on. During our visit we will also do a preliminary sketch of the space and take photos.
This equips us to write a bespoke Consultation Report (if you would like to commission it) for you that summarises our conversation and lays out some initial thoughts on how to take the project forwards.
Sometimes our clients feel brave enough to take the Consultation Report and forge ahead on their own. Sometimes, they prefer us to engage on the whole journey, asking us to follow up with a detailed planting plan and then the sourcing of plants and the actual planting out of the new scheme.
Costs are available on request and are determined by the scale and complexity of each project. We itemise our work so you can choose how to structure the project.
